June 2024 Update

This month has been nothing short of extraordinary for whale watching in Sydney! We’ve had fantastic sightings of whales every week. As these magnificent creatures embark on their great northern migration to the warmer waters of far North Queensland and towards the Great Barrier Reef, they’ve put on quite a show for us!

The annual migration of the humpback whales is one of nature’s most awe-inspiring events. Each year, these gentle giants travel from their feeding grounds in the freezing waters of Antarctica to the warmer breeding and calving grounds off the coast of Queensland. This epic journey covers up to 10,000 kilometres round trip and sees thousands of whales passing by the coastline of New South Wales, with Sydney being a prime spot to witness this awesome spectacle.

This season, we’ve been treated to a range of exciting whale behaviours. Tail slaps and breaches have been a common sight, thrilling both our seasoned whale watchers, and first-timers alike. Tail slaps are a powerful display, where the whale forcefully slaps its tail flukes against the water, creating a thunderous sound that can be heard from quite a distance. Breaching, on the other hand, is a dramatic display where the whale launches itself out of the water and then crashes back down with a massive splash. These behaviours are not only spectacular to watch but also serve various purposes, from communication to dislodging parasites and even just for play.

Despite being held back on a few days due to the weather, our commitment to providing the best whale watching experience remains unwavering. July is especially promising, often regarded as the best month for whale watching. This period offers the highest chance of seeing not just individual whales, but pods, including mothers with their calves, navigating the journey north. It’s a time when the ocean seems alive with movement and energy.
